Frequently Asked Questions

There are streaming services that intensely track your activities on and off their platforms to feed their AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms and suggest content to you based on what they think will hook you more. We’re not one of them.

We find that practice to be very inhumane, considering the joy and satisfaction one can obtain from great storytelling is very human in nature. We also believe that constantly feeding you what an algorithm thinks you want to watch would make some really great stories hard to discover because they didn’t quite match up with the recommendations. So we don’t do that. We’re unapologetically proud of not succumbing to the AI overlords.

As funny as that saying is, we’re not mad. We promise. Maybe a little. We organize our content in the simplest of ways to make finding something interesting and compelling to watch an easy task. It’s really not even a “task” to us. It’s more like a journey that shouldn’t involve endless scrolling. Doom-scrolling is a thing.

We start with a few categories like: Genres, Niches, and Channels. It’s the holy trinity of streaming. No more having to decide between movies or shows, or trying to figure out each platform’s way of organizing content. We think this is a more natural way to discover new and familiar content alike.

Let’s break it down like a fraction:

  • Genres contain hand-curated collections organized by familiar themes, like Action & Adventure, Crime & Mystery, Drama & Coming-of-Age, Classic & Western, and a bunch more. You know exactly what you’re getting in Genres. It’s familiar with a touch of nuance. It’s a comfy balance of movies, shows, docs, shorts, and channels that follow those themes. It’s feel-good, provocative, and heart-thumping. It’s lean-in or lean-back. You decide.
  • Niches take you down the rabbit hole. Still cinephile hand-curated. Still easy to navigate. Niches help you find your calling or feed your obsessions. No criticisms here. Niches are all about compulsively finessing the organization of content to surface the subtleties only you would appreciate. Consider the unpretentious martial arts action flicks from Hong Kong (lower budget yet amply cathartic!), easy-going murder mysteries in British villages (they’ve gotta be devoid of people by now!), not-dubbed deeply touching K-Dramas (so much melodrama!), terrifyingly suspenseful German thrillers (you’ll need a psyche visit afterward!), and so much more waiting to satisfy your 16-bit dreams.
  • Channels are the epitome of the lean-back experience. It’s hundreds of TV channels you can zap through. Channel surf to your heart’s content. Enjoy scrolling through an intuitive on-screen guide, just like cable. But without the cable fees. You can see what’s on now and what’s airing soon. You’ll find plenty of unique channels to satisfy any interest.

Funny name, right? We think it’s particularly amusing. There is, however, a lovely meaning behind the name. Would you expect anything else? It stands for more for me and you. Time for another break-down:

  • Mo is for more opportunities to discover great, often under-served content that might get swallowed up by algorithms on other platforms
  • Me is for… me, the filmmakers and cinephiles who fight the struggle for adequate representation in a world of mega-corporate consolidation
  • Tu is for you (in Latin), a nod to our amazing viewers and cinephile audience of people who appreciate the art just as much as the explosions.

Yes, Absolutely! You won’t pay us a penny to use our service. We won’t even ask you for a credit card. You can watch as many movies, shows, documentaries, short films, trailers, and streaming channels as you’d like — for free! No subscription needed. You don’t even have to create an account, but you might want to in order to get the extra features. It’s entirely optional, of course. To fund the service and make it sustainable, we run occasional ads that pay the filmmakers and distributors a fair share for their content and to cover the costs of operating our service.

Nope! Nadda. It’s completely optional. You can watch all of our content, as much of it as you’d like — without needing to create a free account or signing in. We’ll keep track of your progress for you so you can pause and continue watching later on the same TV, computer, or mobile device. If you’d like to synchronize your progress and be able to pause and continue watching on any of your TVs, computers, and mobile devices, and to save content to your own Favorites list, you’ll need to create a free account and sign in.

When you sign up for a free Mometu account and sign in on all your TVs, computers, and mobile devices, we’ll automatically save your progress so you can pause, go do something else, and return to watch at a later time. This works on any compatible device that you have signed into with your free Mometu account. It also works on different WiFi and cellular networks. You’ll also be able to save content to your own Favorites list to watch at a later time. Want to look back at what you watched before? Maybe watch it again or share it with family and friends? We’ll save your watch history to help you with that. We won’t ask you for a credit card, mailing address, or to commit to a subscription. No in-app purchases or trials to cancel, either. The only pieces of information we will ask you for is your email address and a password to secure your account.

We will only collect your email address if you provide it to us when signing up for a free Mometu account or when signing up for our newsletter from our website. We will never sell your email address to anyone. The purposes of collecting your email address are to administer your free Mometu account and to send periodic newsletters. You can unsubscribe by clicking “unsubscribe” at the bottom of our newsletters without affecting your Mometu account.

Periodically, we’ll email our users who have signed up for a free Mometu account a newsletter with suggestions of interesting and compelling content to watch on Mometu. These newsletters are hand-curated by us, not AI. Real humans who love to watch movies and TV shows sharing ideas and suggestions with our users.

Probably not, but we’ll let you be the judge of what’s appropriate for your children. We have a wide variety of content and display ratings wherever possible. However, independent films are not always rated. As such, much of our content is intended for a mature audience. If you find something inappropriate for your tastes, try a different category. We have a wide variety of content and hope you’ll find something that captures your interest.

We run occasional ads to pay filmmakers and their distributors a fair share for their content, and to pay for the costs to operate our service. You get to watch content for free without a subscription or credit card. We think that’s a pretty good trade that benefits everyone.

Of course you can! We don’t set limits, so you can watch Mometu on as many TVs, desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones as your Internet service and WiFi will handle.

All content on Mometu is officially licensed and made legally available to you. We strongly believe in maintaining healthy partnerships with filmmakers and distributors for the long run. As cinephiles, we feel it’s important for us to support the indie filmmaking industry.

There must be gremlins in the system! Fear not, most issues are resolved in short order. Our service is monitored 24/7, 365 days a year by a team of technology professionals. Having said that, Mometu does require a consistent Internet connection to work properly. We’ve tuned our service to work well on good and poor WiFi and cellular networks, but sometimes things fall outside of our control. Many of the most common issues can be resolved simply by restarting our app. If that doesn’t do the trick, rest assured that we are aware of the issue and are working on it.

From time to time, and honestly it’s pretty infrequent, we get notified by distributors that certain content has to be removed because their licensing has changed. We respect and honor those notices and address them in a timely manner to maintain an honest service. Because this can happen on an unscheduled basis, we’re not able to provide our users with advance notice when content is leaving the platform. We may remove titles for other reasons, including but not limited to appropriateness, quality standards, service optimizations, seasonality, etc. We reserve the right to remove content at any time without notice.

We have established partnerships with a variety of content distributors from around the world and would be happy to put you in touch with someone who can best assist you. Just fill out this form https://mometu.com/submit-your-film/ and we’ll connect you with the right people. We can also prioritize what new content we take from our distributors, on a case-by-case basis.

The amount of time it takes to receive content can vary depending on the distributor. As such, we are unable to provide time expectations or guarantees. In certain instances, content that is ordered may not make it on the service or may be delayed.

Because all of our content is officially licensed through reputable content distributors, filmmakers are able to get a fair share of the advertising revenue we generate based on how much their content is watched. All the technical and ad sales work is taken care of for them.

We’re integrated with several ad platforms and marketplaces in addition to offering direct promotional opportunities. Reach out to us by email at [email protected] and we’ll be in touch. Got a unique idea or proposition? We’d love to hear it!
